Topic: Conferences: useful?
I'm pretty new to Ruby/Rails, though I've finished a couple personal Rails projects and I'm working on an app for the public. My general goal is to ease my way from my present job as a Java developer into full time Ruby work either as an independent guy or in a company.
I've been wondering whether I should make more of an effort go to conferences. I feel sort of guilty for not going them. It's just that I can't figure out the value. There is already more information available in books, websites, online video, podcasts, and forums than I could possibly assimilate.
It seems like going to a conference is like trying to drink from a firehose and then someone dumps a cup of water on your head. And then a dog comes up and bites you. (The cup of water represents the conference, the dog represents the airlines, I've already explained the firehose.)
I don't know. I guess this is an issue where I could use some informed insight. Ranting subjective opinions are fine too.
