Topic: 5 Tips for RoR Beginners

1) Use "screen" to simplify your life (and save you precious time)

The UNIX "screen" utility is one of those tools make you think, "How did I ever live without this?" Watch this screencast to see how "screen" can help you take control of your rails dev environment!

2) This is not a pop-quiz - Cheating encouraged!

If you're anything like me, you have a plethora of references, cheat sheets, and tutorials scattered across your hard disk. Thanks to ERR THE BLOG, we can quickly access Ruby-centric cheat sheets right in our terminal! This screencast demonstrates installation and usage of "cheat". Go ahead and cheat, I won't tell if you don't...

3) The Rails console: The best friend you didn't know you had...until now.

The rails console was intimidating and foreign to me when I first started using RoR. Until I read this article by Amy Hoy which opened my eyes to its power. :tip => "just read this"

4) Don't know how to write? Just start reading (and tinkering)

You can follow step-by-step tutorials all day long and end up with nothing but a migraine and a tendency to repeat everything people say to you. The best way to learn to program is to read (and execute) somebody else's working code. Same goes for Rails! This little ditty will show you where to find open-source Rails apps and walk you through playing with one

5) Use and support the RoR community

Both Ruby and Rails have thriving communities. Get involved and have fun. Here's a list of great community sites you can check out!

http://railsforum.com (pssst - you're there!)
http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails (wiki=community =)
http://groups.google.com/group/rubyonrails-talk (mailing list)
http://www.railslodge.com/ (rails plugins, yay!)
http://www.noobkit.com/ (docs, docs, and more docs)
http://rubyforge.org/ (not just rails, but great anyways!)
http://rubyurl.com/nGu (oh no I didnt?!?!)
