Re: Some good books on ruby

I really like The Well Grounded Rubyist by David Black.  It was published just last year.  The book is the best overall introduction to ruby in my opinion.  I also suggest Beginning Ruby by Peter Cooper.

Re: Some good books on ruby

+1 David Black's book.

Re: Some good books on ruby

While most people will tend to recommend "Programming Ruby" (The Pickaxe) - I find the book not very successful at actually teaching Ruby and the Ruby isms that exist. Granted it's a great book, and it's on my shelf right now - I use it as an language reference all the time. Regardless of your programming level with other languages, I have found great success in recommending Peter Cooper's "Beginning Ruby" to people starting out with Ruby. Get the Pickaxe afterward as it functions as a great reference. Matz's O'Reilly book is also great but I find it can be over some people's head if that's the first one they jump on.

Re: Some good books on ruby

+1 for The Well Grounded Rubyist by David Black, but it should perhaps be the 2nd book.

The first book should be The Ruby Way, 2nd Ed., by Hal Fulton IMHO.

For references,  I keep two tabs in my browser reserved for:
http://www.ruby-doc.org/core/
http://stdlib.rubyonrails.org/

It may take a little time to get used to using these resources,  but I find them invaluable.

Re: Some good books on ruby

+1 for 'Beginning Ruby' as your first book.

I've read the Pickaxe and Well Grounded Rubyist and Beginning Ruby.

Re: Some good books on ruby

Mhmm... I never really learned ruby from a book. I just bought a rails book and kind of learned enough of it to get by.

I should buy a Ruby book. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Learning rails, one day at a time.

I recommend Why (poignant) Guide to Ruby.
