Topic: Can Apache and Nginx co-exist peacefully?

I'm using a Host Gator VPS which has apache installed by default on port 80 for cPanel. However, I want to use Nginx to serve my rails app. If Nginx runs on a port other than 80, is it possible to route traffic from specific domains to Nginx without being redirected through Apache first? What kind of performance hit would result from routing the request through Apache to Nginx? Would it make sense to do the opposite and give Nginx port 80 since the rails app is the primary use of the box?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply. What you're saying makes complete sense to me. I do have two IPs for the VPS so this should be easy.
