Topic: Quick question... Where do I start learning?

I have wanted to program forever and have never been able to find the grounds to begin my learning. I had dabbled in Python but never really got into it.

Before we start I want to learn to make/help make apps/web apps like twitter, oink, facebook, things like this. Even basic blogs with a forum portion.

My question is what do I need to learn and where do I start?

From my knowledge -

I need to learn HTML 5, Ruby on Rails, and Apache web servers?
Where should I get started? Basic web design with HTML 5?

And on these programs like Oink and Twitter what does Ruby on Rails/Python/etc do for the site? What is their role?

thanks.

Re: Quick question... Where do I start learning?

A program in web design and development may be best suited for your career objectives. Alternatively, you can also consider getting a degree in computer science. A Bachelor of Computer Science degree is among the most comprehensive IT programs and will qualify you for a job in not just programming,   but also other IT fields like information security, network administration, etc.

Re: Quick question... Where do I start learning?

I appreciate to show your interest and your choice is very good. First you should learn some basic and after you should learn web design. It is a best option fro you. After you can learn some scripting language for developing sites. These all things are learn from the some popular institute or private classes. You have to search all things from the Internet so you get better idea.

Re: Quick question... Where do I start learning?

I have a Master's degree in Software Engineering and Rails is still very complex.  Don't think that a degree will solve any of your problems by the way!

Re: Quick question... Where do I start learning?

I found great HTML5 introduction/reference at http://www.w3schools.com/html5/default.asp
They have also good info about CSS3 and also some Javascript and other stuff you may be interested on.

About Rails, I suggest you the Learning Rails 3 by O'Reilly. http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920021322.do
It has a lot of examples its intereseting and easy to follow. It gets you straight on the fly.
