Topic: Using Oracle

Hello,
I'm deploying a rails solution for a client. The problem I have is that they're insisting that all their database info should be backed up. Now I'm using mySQL but this means I will have to use Oracle (what they're using). I heard a lot of negative comments about the Rails/Ruby Oracle driver. Is it really that slow? What do you advise? Thanks.

Re: Using Oracle

Why do you need to use Oracle if they want it to be backed up? Can't you backup the MySQL database?

Re: Using Oracle

I surely can ryan, but I figured they'd find it strange to have multiple backups, but I'll ask if I can have a mysql backup as well. I think they're looking for a clever way to get me to use their Oracle database.

Re: Using Oracle

I just stumbled across an article on backing up a MySQL database the "rails way". Thought you might find it useful.

Re: Using Oracle

Wow, thanks a lot. I'm on it.

Re: Using Oracle

Well I still hope the original concern is addressed. MySQL is a fine DB and all, but what if the client will only use Oracle? I remember that issue of slow drivers for Oracle and I hope it's been or being fixed.
