Topic: The best book to learn ruby for beginners

Hi

I'm beginner to ruby on rails and very much interested to see the way it has been structured. So I would like to get a book to master ruby. Can you suggest the best book in place to learn ruby.

Thanks

Programming Ruby by Dave Thomas

Re: The best book to learn ruby for beginners

I would highly recommend Chris Pine's "Learning to Program" You can buy the book or read it online for free.

A more advanced book would by "Ruby for Rails" by David Black

"The Ruby Way" is another advanced book and you can browse some chapters for free here:

For a noob anyway, this is by far the best I have found.

Re: The best book to learn ruby for beginners

Hi there -

I strongly recommend "Agile Development with Rails" by Dave Thomas and David Heinenmeier Hansson.  I find that it documents some of the methods of Rails better than the Rails API documentation itself!  I also have Dave Thomas' "Programming Ruby" - aka "the pickaxe".  They're both very well written and packed with good, accurate information that's relatively simple to understand.  I reference them both frequently as a newb myself and highly recommend them.

Hope it helps - good luck!

Here is another book that offers a free pdf version, or 10 bucks for the printed version.
