Topic: Captchas

I was wondering what captchas people have found work best and are the least intrusive to people. I know one could be generated from RMagick or the like. Other than the words ones has anyone found anything good? I've heard of things from sounds to completing sentences to selecting a particular image? I even just recently found this (http://recaptcha.net/) which kind of has an altruistic purpose. What do you guys think?

Re: Captchas

CAPTCHAs are an annoyance for users, but I suppose they keep bots out... the problem is that as bots get more sophisticated, CAPTCHAs can get more difficult to understand for humans.  If your users can't read your CAPTCHA, or it takes them more than one try to get by it, you're probably hurting yourself.  The trade-off, in that case, between annoyance and utility is no longer worth it.

So make sure your CAPTCHA images are readable by humans with little effort.

Another issue with CAPTCHAs is accessibility.  Be sure to include an audio option if you are concerned about allowing people using screen readers to access your site (you probably should be).

reCAPTCHA is a great idea, though their audio option isn't so good (and I don't really see how it could be, in keeping with the spirit of the project).  I actually just wrote about it, today. smile

Re: Captchas

I am definitely going to have an accessible captcha. I am thinking of trying to do something in flash, since its my day job. If I come up with anything I'll post it here.
