Topic: Problems installing Rails

Hi everyone :-)

I am having problems installing Rails3 on Ubuntu 13.04.  Here are the relevant details:

stephanie@Satellite-C660:~$ ruby -v
ruby 1.9.3p194 (2012-04-20 revision 35410) [i686-linux]
stephanie@Satellite-C660:~$ gem -v
2.0.3
stephanie@Satellite-C660:~$ sudo gem install rails
Building native extensions.  This could take a while...
ERROR:  Error installing rails:
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.

    /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 extconf.rb
/usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:45:in `require': cannot load such file -- mkmf (LoadError)
    from /usr/local/lib/site_ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:45:in `require'
    from extconf.rb:13:in `<main>'

Gem files will remain installed in /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/atomic-1.1.10 for inspection.
Results logged to /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/atomic-1.1.10/ext/gem_make.out
stephanie@Satellite-C660:~$

As you can see Ruby and rubygems are installed but running the command 'sudo gem install rails'  produces an error message.  Can anyone tell me why rails won't install?
