Topic: What do you want to see?

We've got tutorials. We've got RSS feeds. We've got super awesome code highlighting wink.

The admin team here has some ideas for improvement that we're already working on, but what do you, the members of Rails Forum, want to see on this site?

We're all ears smile

Re: What do you want to see?

Job exchange. I know there are lots of great Rails programmers but I don't necessarily know who/where they are when I have a project. I'm not sure it's a perfect fit with a forum, but I think it would be more effective than posting on the mailing list.

*wink, wink, knowing nod*

Actually we have something planned in this area.  It might be a few weeks or a couple of months before we get it online.  Though if more people want it, maybe we'll fast track it. smile

Re: What do you want to see?

Somewhat unrelated, but does anyone else think I made the fonts on this thign too big, generally speaking?

Re: What do you want to see?

I'm definitely interested in the job exhange thing.  I could use some help on some of my projects.

And for additions to the site, does anyone think there's a need for a Ruby language forum on here?  There's already a great ruby forum so I think it's unlikely, but I figured it was worth asking.

Recently I came over this rails-wiki page:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages … bleForHire

Maybe that's interesting for you.

My homepage: http://www.komendera.com/
Working at: http://www.abloom.at/
My blog: soaked and soaped http://soakedandsoaped.com/

I'd prefer it not drop down more than one bump of ctrl - if it changes at all (Safari user wink). Edit: but then again my eyes suck.

It's definitely not the first time I've heard this request. Actually this is the fourth or fifth time. If there's enough interest in this thread maybe we'll make it happen smile

Re: What do you want to see?

I don't mind the font size.

A job board would definately be cool.

Is there any type of chatterbox plugin for punbb?  Basically like a little quick chatroom incase you see that someone else is online and you want to drop them a line?  see perlmonks.

I also thought it would be cool if there was a feature where you could put in the rss feed url for your blog, and it would automatically put in the latest post under your username, or maybe sig.  Like I've been doing manually.

How about http://gabbly.com/railsforum.com/ ? Maybe we can start getting members to use something like this?

Or I guess a more traditional private message system could work for that too.

Personally speaking I like the size of fonts here, I think that font size in general across the web, and specifically across web design pages are *way* too small, I'm young with pretty good eyes (at least close up) and this fascination with small fonts is crazy - I know for a fact from  nearly every person over the age of 35 I have discussed this with, that they feel font sizes are too small, I would respectfully ask, what would the point be in having smaller fonts?

As for other issues, I would love to see a greater padding beneath the code blocks when posting, most of the time the code block comes after an explanation of what the code does and as it currently stands the text following a code block seems to unfairly 'cuddle up' with the preceding code block.

But personally speaking (or should that be typing) I think you've managed to create the best rails discussion area available here - this, combined with the (huge) number of blogs dealing with rails, seves the community very well indeed.

Re: What do you want to see?

The Gabbly thing is more what I was talking about.  I don't actually like Private Messaging.  I've never seen gabbly before, that's pretty neat.

Re: What do you want to see?

There are a couple of other sites like Gabbly out there.  I've seen at least 3 mentioned on Ajaxian this year. smile

I'm not sure about installing tons of PunBB plugins, since we do still plan to switch to something ... sometime ... sooner rather than later, I hope. wink  (I really miss the ability to split and merge threads in PunBB!)

Another option for chat, though, is to installed Peter Cooper's Congress (I have the package lying around somewhere).  It's an AJAX chat application that looks and feels a lot like Campfire from 37Signals.

As for fonts... I like them as-is, personally. smile

Re: What do you want to see?

I do too, I don't know why they looked way too big to me last night. Must have been the wide-eyed no sleep thing. smile They are larger than normal... probalby just exaggerated to me by the relatively low screen res (1152x864) on my 21in monitor.

Re: What do you want to see?

Fonts are ok for me. Layout too.
But this green BG for every second post makes me thing it's some special post, selected one, my post or sth. I would change it to some dull colour -- like darker gray.

Admit it, you played with your mouse's scroll wheel while having your elbow on ctrl smile
