I'd like to see a tutorial on threaded replies. Like how Slashdot commenting works.

What in particular?

Re: Tutorial Requests

I don't know how to explain it more specifically.. Comments that can be "children" of other comments. This would require a sort of recursive loop, but I'm having trouble with it.

Here's an example: http://politics.reddit.com/info/64po9/comments/
Ignore how the up/down voting and everything works.

Take a look at acts_as_tree (parent/children relationships) - http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/ActsAsTree.
If you need more help, start a new post and someone will help you :)

Re: Tutorial Requests

Hello, I'm brand new to this forum and to ror. I was wondering if someone could post a screencast or tutorial for creating a simple facebook app using ror. I tried there tutorial but could not get the plug-ins working correctly so was looking for a little more direction. Thanks for any input / help in this.

Re: Tutorial Requests

also not to throw two out there, but i was telling my friend about ror and showed him the blog example. he is developing a personal website (blog, files, comments, forum) just for fun and he was wondering if someone could post a tut on setting up a site. not a whole site but maybe index with styling etc .. and one link just to give idea. if this is possible it would be a great help to him and possibly get him off of php. thanks

nownot, check out this two-part tutorial on building a facebook app with Rails;

http://www.liverail.net/articles/2007/6 … y-on-rails

I tried it over six months ago, so some of it may be a little outdated - but I'm sure it'll prove useful. The rfacebook gem was a little quirky too, so hopefully that has been fixed.

Re: Tutorial Requests

I would appreciate (and pay for) a tutorial which utilizes the restful_authentication plugin as the base of a site - maybe a blogging engine, basic forum cms, or something more original(?!) - and builds out a few more models (posts, comments, etc) with which to make functional and integration tests to check the restful_authentication works with these new models, i.e. adding posts, making comments, CRUD through RJS etc.

Testing is something that I really want to get to grips with (be it TDD or BDD - unlike REST, I'm not sure which way the tides are turning with this one). I have four Peepcode credits left, so I was thinking of going through all the RSpec tutorials...

Re: Tutorial Requests

I'd like to see a thread on how to make collapseable/expandable lists with rails.

Re: Tutorial Requests

How to add avatars to restful authentication.

Re: Tutorial Requests

Hi,

I could not find any tutorial on how to create a Private Messaging controler for  users of a same website (no plugin either), so users can send and read messages (ideally including an email notification): basically a messaging system similar to the ones used in forums.

Thank you

I managed to do this on my first app using an attachment_fu tutorial;

Re: Tutorial Requests

Hi,

I was wondering if there was a tutorial on how to integrate a Rails app with phpBB?

Thank you for your help,

Re: Tutorial Requests

I found a lot of valuable tutorials and most of them can be easily adapted for rails 2.x. What is realy missing for me is the following :

Action Mailer: I am looking for a tutorial for connecting actionmailer to a SMTP server with SSH or TLS.

Active LDAP:  Same for connecting to an existing LDAP directory for authentication probably with activeldap.

Gem Install: Last I am obliged to install manually all the gems as I am under windows behind a firewall, it seems that there is some solutions but there is no exhaustive tutorial.

I do believe that this would be of great help for newbies like me.

Cheers

Alain

Re: Tutorial Requests

I know this may sound silly, but hey, the only bad question is the one not asked.

Boy am i having trouble with acts_as_tree.

Does anyone know of a tutorial to get it set up and running?

i created a table, added the acts_as_tree to the model, read the chapter from AWDWR, but not sure where to go now.

Even in my C++ Days, trees were never my best area, especially those red/black trees grrrrr.

I just have some questions i cant get anwered.

Since i am guessing that there is only one root, is it best to name it Whatever_Categories and then make the select box on the associated model views only list the children and sub children?

Effectively making all first children the Main categories and sub-children sub categories?

Or can each Parent Category be its own root?

Boy i really wish i could just do a has many/belogs to with join table and :through

Could anyone post a tut on twitter clones.

Twitter is a fairly large site asking for a tut on how to build a site like it is crazy, you would need to learn to program and scope out the problem and then apply your own solution, or pay someone to do it for you.
