Topic: Ruby Load Time on Windows

Today I decided to check if there is anything I can do to speed up the load time of Rails on Windows

So, I took some timings on my system (a Q6600 with Vista):

* It takes 6 seconds to load "script/console" from a dos prompt
* It takes 10 seconds to load "script/console" from a cygwin prompt
* It takes 5 seconds to load "script/console" from a dos prompt in a RamDisk

For a point of ref can some other people post some example timings?

Also, does anyone know any tricks for making this faster (especially cygwin)

Cheers
Sam

Re: Ruby Load Time on Windows

FWIW,

Same computer running linux I get 2 seconds to load "script/console". I am trying out working on linux for a week to see how I go

Re: Ruby Load Time on Windows

I'll do some speed tests tonight, but it loads pretty quickly for me.

It was almost instantaneous in Ubuntu Fiesty. Unfortunately, that disk had a malfunction, so I lost my Linux partition. After a reload, I grabbed the VMWare client and the Gutsy Gibbon appliance, but I haven't installed ruby/rails in the appliance yet. I will post speed tests from that when I get some.

Re: Ruby Load Time on Windows

load time in cygwin = 15 seconds :-(

load time in Ubuntu 7.10 appliance under VMware Player = about 2 seconds.

Gedit2 is pretty rockin looking too. It's almost like Textmate now...

Re: Ruby Load Time on Windows

FWIW I got < 2 seconds on OSX Tiger, on a 2GHz Macbook Pro.

Re: Ruby Load Time on Windows

It's funny that VirtualBox+Gutsy is probably a better option for Rails development than going the Cygwin route on Windows. Plus you get beanstalkd to work smile

Edit... It looks like www.andlinux.org my provide a solution for Windows users
