Topic: lighttpd crashes, an old mother cries

Sorry for the crappy pun and the Live lyrics smile

Anyway, I just got a Macbook last week and set up the classic Rails environment of lighttpd and FastCGI. Everything's installed in /usr/local. However, when I run ./script/server I can use lighttpd for about 3 seconds before it crashes. If I force WEBrick my app runs fine (just testing with a local install of Typo right now), and the app runs fine under Mongrel as well.

Here are my questions:

1. Where can I get more information on what's happening with lighttpd? (i.e. location of log files, etc.).
2. Anyone have a specific issue like this before? If so, what did you do to fix it?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks smile

When you run ./script/server with lighttpd, does it output anything before it crashes? Perhaps a stack trace?

I had some problems with lighttpd at first. After re-installing it (FastCGI, PCRE, and lighttpd) by following these instructions it worked perfectly.

Re: lighttpd crashes, an old mother cries

Here's the output when I run ./script/server:

vinnie-garcias-computer:~/rails/typo vinnie$ ./script/server
=> Booting lighttpd (use 'script/server webrick' to force WEBrick)
=> Rails application started on http://0.0.0.0:3000
=> Call with -d to detach
=> Ctrl-C to shutdown server (see config/lighttpd.conf for options)
Exiting
vinnie-garcias-computer:~/rails/typo vinnie$

Absolutely nothing useful in my opinion.

Any ideas?

And my install was based on that hivelogic article, but I used this package to automate the process a little.

Re: lighttpd crashes, an old mother cries

I had this happen to me just recently (trying to start the server and it stopping with no error messages). It was because I was missing Gems after a re-install.

probably doesn't help, but I thought I'd add it anyway.

*edit* I just noticed you said it worked under mongrel. so I guess your problem is much more complex than mine (because in my case the server wouldn't start either way) smile

Vin, I had used that package, but it completely screwed up my mac and I just re-installed OS X and used the hivelogic tutorial.  It was a new mac so reinstalling was fine though.  I suggest taking the time to do it by hand, it is pretty easy, and much smoother

Yeah that looks like my next option, just wiping everything in /usr/local and starting fresh. sad
