Topic: Sending out a lot of email ... hosting options anyone?

Hi,

So, my happy Rails app needs to send out a lot of email to notify people of new events that they subscribe to. Unfortunately, my host (coughdreamhostcough) has an upper limit of 100 recipients per hour. Yes, if I send 100 emails with 1 recipient I've hit my quota; if I send 25 emails with 4 recipients I've also hit my quota. This is obviously not going to work for a busy site.

I'm hoping there's someone here who has gone through the pain of scaling up a web app...

Does anyone have a workaround for the quota limits?
Any suggestions on a better host for high-volume email distribution?
Are there email-only distribution services?
Would getting a colo be the right thing where I manage my own e-mail server and go through a whitelisting process?

Thank you!

Re: Sending out a lot of email ... hosting options anyone?

Get a VPS and set up your app on it and use an email server on it to send mail. Maybe use AuthSMTP (authsmtp.com?) with your app on a VPS to send mail, but they cost.

Thanks. Actually we are using their VPS solution.

Is there a different VPS host that you recommend?

Perhaps sending email to each recipient is not the best approach to take.

Instead of email updates there are RSS feeds. You could also set up a mailing list with an external service for your users, then your application just sends an email to the list instead of to each user.
