Topic: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

Hello everyone,

So...i'll be open, I'm a tree hugging liberal, and I want feel good about myself and buy hosting that is either wind or solar powered...at the very least carbon-neurtral.

Anyone had good experience with a green host that support RoR? Nothing special, I don't need tons of bandwidth or anything at this point, just some good green hosting.

Thanks a bunch!
Seth

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

Dreamhost is green. I host my site there.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

I work for a Green Startup and we are currently hosting on an Apple TV smile

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

I know dreamhost is carbon neutral. Any people getting their rails hosted by solar or wind power?

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

So I know that rails hosting can be tricky, and even though they say they host rails apps, some have no clue what they're doing. What are the biggest things i should look out for? I found this wind powered rails hosting from a small host out of Portland (I'm a native Oregonian), and it looks reasonable? Do any of you more knowledgeable people out there see any red flags about this host?

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

I only trust

Slicehost

Dreamhost

It depends on my clients needs, but with these two hosts, I have not had any problems.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

Let's say your client was absolutely set on having 100% renewable hosting, how would you reconcile their needs?

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

If the option is not available, the client has to realize that, and find a compromise.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

Well sustainable hosting IS available. I am just trying to see if anyone has used them, for better or worse.

A few examples of wind/solar hosting that supports rails (that I've found).

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

At RailsCluster we try to be as green as we can. That means that we solely buy "Energy Smart" servers that cut down power consumption by 40% without giving into performance, and configure Linux to throttle back the CPU consumption when it's not actively in use. Our offices are powered by green energy too.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

I've done a round up of my own rails hosting experiences, and there are some excellent additions in the comments. From memory, I think  rimuhosting had a green offering, but don't quote me.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

Curious what snizneth ended up using... I have the same interest (although quite happy to pick a Rails Host that is merely Carbon Neutral).    I noticed that Blue Box Group (http://www.blueboxgrp.com/) has partnered with ClimateTrust to achieve Carbon Neutrality, but I have not used them, and so cannot vouch for their Rails prowess.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

Just came across Rackspace's website this morning and found out that they're offering (green hosting.

Rackspace now owns Slicehost and I dig Slicehost. But I'm not sure though if Slicehost is also using those green servers.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

I trust Slicehost.
Maybe Linode is green => http://www.linode.com/
I don't know.

Re: Green Ruby on Rails Hosting?

I was happy to learn that DreamHost has a carbon offsetting program. I've personally been a customer of theirs since 2004 and for lightweight needs they've been great.

Slightly off-topic: I've recently run into some issues with DH, hitting outbound number-of-email-messages caps, and also some DH admin borked one of our critical MySQL databases. *sigh*
