Topic: Should I learn Ruby before tackling Rails?

I currently own Simply Rails 2 and a Rails Recipe book, and have been following along fairly well.  I took a month off (big mistake), and am getting back in the game.

Should I start with learning Ruby before I get back headstrong into Rails?

I've heard the pickaxe book is a great place to start; I just don't know if it's essential to build a simple web app like a contact manager.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Should I learn Ruby before tackling Rails?

It certainly does not hurt to get acquianted with ruby before hitting the road with rails, but you can learn it as you go along with rails as well.

If you already have programming experience, then learning ruby while learning rails is no problem, just keep http://api.rubyonrails.org as well as http://www.ruby-doc.org open in some browser windows (:

Re: Should I learn Ruby before tackling Rails?

Thanks for the link to ruby-doc.org; haven't seen that site before.  For programming experience, I played a bit with PHP and MySQL but was certainly no expert at it.

I suppose what I'll do is continue with rails and learn Ruby as I go.  With working a full time schedule and limited development hours, I just need to pick a starting point and focus.

PS.  I'm surprised at how much I forgot in the month I took off of learning Rails.  Even my own posts here on the forums are above my head, lol!

Re: Should I learn Ruby before tackling Rails?

Just stick to it. The learning curve with RoR can be somewhat steep as the whole MVC business is, in most cases, something that's neglected when dealing with PHP.

Another great (e)book for starting off with rails is this one http://pragprog.com/titles/rails3/agile … rd-edition

Happy coding (:

Re: Should I learn Ruby before tackling Rails?

Thanks for the encouragement; I need it!  I actually forgot to mention that I do own the PDF version of that book as well, but haven't started reading just yet.

It was all a bit overwhelming the first time around but maybe this next time will be better.  Again, thanks!

Re: Should I learn Ruby before tackling Rails?

Go back and forth between learning Rails and Ruby. Each time you hit a wall in Rails, it often means that you are lacking some skills in Ruby or misc programming.
