Topic: What editor is this?

Hi,

Does anyone know what editor the guy in this video is using?

Thanks!

Textmate

If you're stuck on Windows (like me sad ) then e is a good alternative.

Nope, I'm on a Mac.  Thanks for the help!

Are there any good editors that are free?  I am willing to pay, but I'd like to consider some free alternatives first.

Re: What editor is this?

You can try out Snultron. It does a pretty good job with most code and plain text, and its free. I don't use it as much being comfortable with TextMate more, but here is the link for it if you want to check it out: http://tuppis.com/smultron/

Boy that video was a trip. It was like supernerd on crack and drinking a Monster at the same time tongue.

Re: What editor is this?

Heh...that guy also wrote Ruby on Rails smile

Re: What editor is this?

@FredT: I highly recommend jEdit, which is free, has gazillions of plugins, and is quite stable. I've been using it successfully for years on everything from Red Hat Linux to XP to Tiger and Leopard. FWIW, though, even with jEdit around I ultimately just coughed up the money for TextMate, which seems to be the default editor for Mac Ruby people.

Re: What editor is this?

Purchasing Textmate is money well spent. No editor comes close to it for developing a rails app. I have tested: jedit, rored, vim, apatana, bbedit, notepad++, etc.

Re: What editor is this?

+1 for Textmate. I use Eclipse during my day job, and was initially turned off by Aptana-Studio, as it felt too clunky when writing Ruby/ ROR. Textmate however, felt just right (especially with the RubyRobot theme). You can download a free trial version to try it out. I tried it out twice, then bought it. Simple, small footprint, and stays out of your way.

However, there are two features I'd really like to see in Textmate: code refactoring (rename, change location, extract method, etc) and code insight. These two features are bundled into RubyMine, from Jetbrains. You can download a free beta copy here: http://www.jetbrains.com/ruby/index.html

I tried it, and will probably try it again in the future. Jetbrains did a great job, but for now - Textmate is my choice.

Thanks!

TEXTMATE FTW!

It's the best!

Here are links to the bundles:

Re: What editor is this?

Oh and whatever you do, DO NOT jump on the emacs bandwagon. It's LAME! Unless you like coding like it's 1989.

Re: What editor is this?

I prefer textmate and that is what I use for development. When I am in a pinch and I don't have my mac with me (Heaven Forbid), I like using aptana studio which is free and also has windows/linux versions as well as mac.

Re: What editor is this?

I'm using Netbeans.  Looks like I am in the minority.

It's really not bad, but tries to do too much for me.  I'd probably prefer vi with a few doodads. :-D

But if you want it / Then you must find it
But when you have it / There'll be no need for it

Re: What editor is this?

When not using TextMate on the mac, I used EditPlus on the whinders machine.

You are right. He is the creator of Rails. Crazy hearing him speak though... LOL

There was an issue with DHHs domain registrar and the rubyonrails.org domain got parked for a while. It's back now.

Has someone tried to use e with wine?

Well, I thought. This is how the world works. All energy flows according to the whims of the Great Magnet. What a fool I was to defy him.

Why oh why, when there's vim and emacs smile
