Topic: 500,000 to 1million records a day. Can Rails scale to that?

Hi all,

We are planning to use rails+mysql to develop a website that sells Lotto Tickets. We expect 500,000 to 1 million(/8 hours) tickets sold a day. Each records should be 100 bytes long only.

And we also need to use SSL+Transaction Support.

The big question is Can Rails support that amount of traffic? Or I better consider PHP?

Best Regards

If you need to ask you probably will have trouble either way.

Re: 500,000 to 1million records a day. Can Rails scale to that?

might be hard in any way.

8 hrs are 28800 seconds,
1million divided by 28800 = 34.7 requests/second.
and thats just the ticket.

Yes, i think it's hard. Maybe we'll try other technique. But still keep Ruby On Rails

The question is : Will your rails app scale.

Precisely. Even works technology agnostic as well... Will your app scale.

It's also largely irrelevant for an app that hasn't been built. Just because you think you will get that many page views doesn't mean that you will. Until your app is written and released the scalability of your technology in general and your code base in particular means nothing.
